When the news broke of Corky’s passing, I went straight to the one coping mechanism I’ve always trusted: the signs. Corky and I shared a deep, mutual obsession with raw urban infrastructure through his legendary Save the Signs project. To honor a man who used his lens to champion other people’s voices, I took a defunct municipal stop sign canvas and painted his memorial portrait.
This moving tribute featured on Next with Kyle Clarkcaptures my studio process, our 18-year history from when Corky first interviewed me in 2008, and the heart of what it means to lose a brother-in-art. The storytelling in this specific segment went on to win a prestigious Heartland Regional Emmy Award. Click the link below to view the original broadcast feature on 9NEWS.
